giving with direction logo

Giving with direction – our fundraising campaign to provide high quality counselling, therapy & training to the group of small business owners, self employed and freelancers who have been excluded from Government support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are all the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat.”

Why are we raising funds?

We are raising funds to support those people who have been excluded from Government support during the Covid-19 pandemic, by providing funding to access mental health support through direction. Now, more than ever, the Covid-19 pandemic is having a negative effect on everyone’s mental health, but inequality plays a role here, meaning not all have been affected equally.

Here at direction, we usually raise funds by renting our meeting room in central Edinburgh, to provide financial support to individuals and couples most in need. Due to the impact of COVID-19, this has not been possible, therefore drastically reducing the funds available for additional assistance.

Who are we aiming to support?

The middle group of people who have seen income plummet as a result of furlough, self-employment or small business owners – the ‘financially less able’. There is already access to funding in Scotland for the unemployed or people on low incomes. However, the group of people we wish to help are in employment and, therefore, not eligible for full benefits. They have been struggling through the pandemic, with little or no Government support and on vastly reduced incomes, meaning they have little spare money for much-needed therapy.

Covid-19 and the ensuing lockdown presented the most unforeseen challenges to many individuals and businesses across the UK. While government support packages have provided much needed support for many, there remain some 3 million taxpayers – 10% of the UK workforce, who have found themselves excluded from meaningful support, leaving large cracks within these measures. Some of these “excluded”, as they term themselves, were able to claim universal credit, helped by the suspension of the “minimum income floor” that usually limits benefit payments to low-earning sole traders, but others, with savings or a partner in work, cannot claim even this.

It is for this group of people that we are providing much-needed support.

How your support will change lives

Will you support us and enable more people to access our life-changing services?

In the UK, we are facing a mental health crisis.  We know that mental health challenges affect millions of us, in our families, our workplaces and in our wider communities.

The support you are helping to fund is truly life-changing, not just for the individual receiving mental health support, but also for the people around them, their family, friends, and work colleagues.

Our aim is to empower these individuals with resilience, allowing them to take back control of their lives and gain confidence to make real changes.  Changes that will have far reaching benefits for the rest of their lives, allowing them to maintain good mental health in the future.  We want to arm them with the tools to move from surviving to thriving.

Individual Donations

We are incredibly grateful for financial donations of any size.  This is a not-for-profit campaign – all profit will go towards providing this much-needed support. You can do this by visiting our online fundraising page here.

Corporate Donations

If your business can donate, as a small way of thanks, we will include your business logo and website link on the direction website and share on our social media. A minimum donation of £100 is required for this.

Corporate Sponsorship

We have bespoke sponsorship packages available for our corporate supporters. Please contact us to discuss this.  Examples of ways we can work together:

  • Sponsoring one of our retreats
  • Sponsoring a training or therapy session
  • Sponsoring an event (online or in-person, when Covid-19 restrictions allow)

The benefits of supporting this campaign are:

  • Exposure across all of direction’s social media channels, as well as any marketing and PR undertaken in the promotion of the event/service.
  • Aligning your business with a great cause, and a reputable brand.
  • Knowing that your support will have life-saving, long-term benefits.

Social Media

We appreciate money is tight for many now, so sharing our campaign on your social media channels is a great (and free!) way to help us.  Please follow the ‘Being human – with direction’ Facebook and Instagram pages (links at top of this page).  Any likes, shares and comments bring extra visibility to the campaign, and are hugely appreciated.

We have a social media toolkit which provides you with images and captions to share (available for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn) making it super easy for you to share the campaign. Please contact us to request this.

Events

We will be running a series of events (where Covid-19 allows) throughout 2021 – both in person and online.  Keep an eye on our social media channels or sign up to our mailing list (at the bottom of this page) to be kept in the loop.  We would love you to join our events and fundraise when you can. You can also fundraise for direction by taking part in other third-party events – simply share our GoFundMe page with your contacts!  The link to share is: https://www.gofundme.com/f/giving-with-direction

Online Auction

We will be holding an online auction in Spring 2021.  We would love for you to get involved!  If you can donate an item, service or experience we would love to hear from you.  Maybe you can donate a product or service from your business?  It’s a great way to get a little free publicity for your business too – win/win!  Please contact us if you are able to donate, by emailing enquiries@direction.org.uk

We are always open to other ways of fundraising, so if you have any ideas, please do get in touch!

How much would we like to raise?

In the immediate term, we are aiming to raise a minimum of £12,000 to be able to provide this financially less able group of people with high quality 1-1 or group therapy, counselling, or places on our training days and retreats.

Applicants can apply for funding to help cover the costs of their counselling, psychotherapy and/or training, with one of direction’s experienced, high quality therapists and professional trainers.  If you would like to enquire about support, please email enquiries@direction.org.uk

Thank you so much for your support.
